Project area

The project area is situated in the Holocene floodplain of the northern upper-Rhine, in Riedstadt, 40 km to the south-west of Frankfurt. This map shows the location of Riedstadt (source: openstreetmap.org).

The area comprises 60 hectares of restoration fields, lying along both sides of the main dyke of the Rhine, thus including areas in the functional as well as in the fossil floodplain. 21 ha were bought from federal subsidies, 24 contributed by the municipality of Riedstadt and 15 by the federal state of Hesse.

This map of the project area shows the different project sites. All sites have in common that they are situated very low so that they are regularly flooded, either by the flood of the Rhine or by rising ground water (behind the dyke). Furthermore you can see the donor-sites in different nature-reserves.
